Spring 2007. Junior year of high school. No shame.
I’m proud to be an American and it really took hold my Jr. year of HS. I wore this shirt (which had in prior years belonged to my fashion inclined grandmother) periodically from this day on.
On this specific day I was reppin’ the red, white, and blue when my mind struck gold; I would stand up and lead my U.S. History class in the pledge of allegiance!! So 5th period came around and I had encited help from my friends, that they would join me in reciting the pledge when I stood up. Class began and Mr. Albers (aka Alby) began lecturing and discussing some chapter from our textbook.
My boldness swelled and I interrupted him mid-sentencd by standing to my feet, placing my right hand over my heart, and saying “I would like to lead the class in a spontaneous act of patriotism by giving the pledge of allegiance.”
My teacher stared at me blankly as if he was both shocked and not surprised in the least (as I was always an active source of clownage and dumbness). Every one of my friends who had agreed to my plan broke ranks and remained in their seats as I energetically acted a fool.
Embarrassed and blushing I carried on chin up and chest puffed. I began, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America…” My words kept coming, but as my eyes drifted from face to face of my classmates, I became enamored with my own retardation and a cheesy green assumed it’s position from cheek to bright red cheek. Somewhere in the middle, I forgot the words to the rest of the pledge and took my seat.
I felt silly but was unashamed. I was acustomed to feeling this way and if I provided the least bit of entertainment I was satisfied. Alby let me complete my charade, perhaps just to get in a good breather mid-lecture. He was a good sport. I still have this shirt. And if you’re lucky, someday you might spot me in it.
The End.
“Oh now I find, every subtle thing screams your name. It reminds me of places and times we shared. Could not live, locked in these memories. Now I’m chained to my thoughts again.
Tried to forget when I left this town, but I’ll take you right back if you come back around.
Retrace the steps we took on that lost summer night. I’m back there by your side. Retrace the steps we took when we met. Worlds away, counting backwards while the stars are falling.
I need some shelter. I need some safety. Photographs, they haunt me lately. Chasing shadows as the evening takes me. I’m still searching but the pictures fading.”
